Requirements

Freshman

Once accepted for admission to Chicago State University, all freshmen students must complete the University qualifying examination in English, and Mathematics prior to enrolling in the first term. The assessments will determine placement into:

  • English:
    • ENG 1230; or
    • ENG 1240; or
    • ENG 1270.
  • Math:
    • MATH 1200; or
    • MATH 1200 & MATH 1195 (lab for support).

Transfer

Transfer students who have not completed an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree must complete an English and Math test. Please review the information below to determine if you are exempt from the required testing.

Test Exemptions

You may be exempt from the placement testing if:

  • You earned an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree or earned a minimum of 75 credit hours and completed the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum (GECC); or
  • Successfully completed the Illinois Certification Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP); or
  • You transfer in a college-level general education Math and English course with a 'C' grade or better.

 

Note: the exemption will not stand if a college, department, program, or major requires the completion of the placement test.
